SUMMARY:Maryam Al-Adra
DESCRIPTION:The Maryam of Virgin Church\, one of the oldest surviving houses in Slemani. This historic church is not only a testament to the city’s architectural heritage but also a living archive of collective memory. Its ancient stone walls and vaulted ceilings create a unique acoustic environment\, where even the softest sounds linger and resonate\, inviting deep listening. Within these walls\, generations have gathered for worship\, reflection\, and community\, filling the space with music\, prayer\, and shared stories. The church’s distinctive acoustics preserve these sonic traces\, making every footstep\, whispered prayer\, and song part of a layered tapestry of memory. For visitors and the local community alike\, experiencing sound in this space is an act of connecting with the past—where place and memory are brought to life through listening. Maryam of Virgin Church stands as a powerful reminder of how architecture shapes not only what we see\, but also what we hear and remember. In honouring its soundscape\, we honour the enduring spirit and history of Slemani itself.

SUMMARY:Paia Studio
DESCRIPTION:Paia Studio is uniquely located in a former public swimming pool\, now transformed into a vibrant creative studio hosting a range of cultural activities. This year\, SPACE21 has chosen Paia Studio as one of its new festival venues\, recognising its distinctive atmosphere and creative potential. The venue’s striking blend of past and present—echoes of water and play now giving way to artistic exploration—offers a compelling backdrop for innovative cultural expression. For the festival\, SPACE21 will present a live performance specially designed to resonate with Paia Studio’s character. The performance will draw on the site’s history as a communal gathering place\, exploring themes of transformation\, memory\, and renewal. By activating this repurposed space through sound and movement\, the festival aims to celebrate both the legacy and the new creative energy of Paia Studio\, inviting audiences to experience the poetry of place in a truly immersive way.

SUMMARY:SPACE21 Sound Gallery
DESCRIPTION:SPACE21 Sound Gallery is housed on the second floor of the historic Yellow Building in the old tobacco factory in Slemani. Abandoned after the Kurdish revolution in 1991\, the factory has been reborn as a vibrant cultural hub—a “culture factory”—for the city’s creative makers. The gallery’s hall still holds the scent and spirit of its sonic past\, echoing the labour and stories of those who once worked there\, including the father of SPACE21 founder Hardi Kurda. Stepping into the hall is like entering a living tobacco factory museum\, where the original machines remain as silent witnesses to a bygone era. Today\, instead of producing tobacco\, the space invites listeners and artists to collaborate in the creation of sound. The hall’s resonance calls everyone back to collective work\, transforming industrial memory into an artistic experience—where the sounds of the past inspire new sonic futures

SUMMARY:Mofti Hammam
DESCRIPTION:Hammam Mufti – SPACE21 explores the powerful connection between the sonic memory of the Hammam and the Kurdish audience\, as well as the architectural qualities that make these spaces so acoustically distinctive. The Hammam\, once a vibrant centre of social life in Kurdistan\, holds a deep resonance in both personal and collective memory\, even as its everyday relevance has faded. Its architecture\, with vaulted ceilings\, domes\, and stone surfaces\, creates a unique acoustical environment where sounds linger\, echo\, and envelop visitors. These sonic qualities are not incidental but fundamental to the Hammam’s identity\, shaping how people remember and experience the space. By revisiting the Hammam through the lens of SPACE21’s sound art exhibition\, the audience is invited to listen anew\, engaging with the space not only as a relic of the past but as a living\, resonant environment. The exhibition leverages the Hammam’s particular spatial and acoustic properties to create site-specific works that awaken both memory and sensory perception. This approach foregrounds listening as an active\, communal process\, allowing visitors to reflect on the Hammam’s place in the shifting urban and social fabric of Kurdistan. Ultimately\, the text highlights how sound and architecture together shape cultural memory. The Hammam’s enduring sonic presence offers a way to reconnect with the past\, trace the transformation of cities\, and foster new experiences of listening—making it an essential and cherished space for the SPACE21 community
