The next space that SPACE21 intends to revisit for listening, and to serve as the starting point for this year’s listening walk session, is Amna Suraka, the notorious Red Security building. Once a site of immense suffering, where Kurdish resistance members were detained and tortured during the dictatorship, Amna Suraka stands as a powerful symbol of both pain and resilience in the collective memory of the city. By beginning the listening walk here, SPACE21 invites participants to engage deeply with the sonic landscape of a place marked by history. Listening becomes an act of remembrance and empathy, allowing us to confront the echoes of the past while being present to the sounds of the present. As the city awakens and life unfolds outside the walls of Amna Suraka, the walk encourages a mindful attention to the transformation and renewal that define the city today. Through this experience, SPACE21 honours the memory of those who suffered and celebrates the city’s ongoing vitality. The act of listening together in such a charged space becomes a statement of hope and solidarity, aligning with SPACE21’s mission to foster new ways of experiencing and understanding our shared environments.
